Undergraduate Advising

Students pursuing a Biological Sciences major who have not officially declared their concentration will meet with the Advising for Biological Sciences, Derek Werner. To schedule an appointment with Derek log into your MyUTK account and click on the “GradesFirst” link found under the academic resources section of your home page. “Once in the “GradesFirst” system, click the “Appointments for Advising and Other Academic Help” button and follow the prompts form there. Click on this handout to schedule an advising appointment to view detailed instruction on using the online system.

On the day of your scheduled appointment, please arrive at 404 Hesler 5-10 minutes early. If you are late for this appointment, you will have to reschedule. If you are unable to attend this appointment, please log back into the GradesFirst system to cancel and reschedule your appointment.

 

Declaring Biological Sciences Concentration

Freshman entering fall 2013 or later

uTrack students will officially declare the concentration for their Biological Sciences major early in their 4th tracking term, if the following criteria are met:

  1. On-track for tracking term 3
  2. Not on academic probation
  3. MyUTK profile lists Biological Sciences as the major

Students who have met this criteria and wish to declare their Biology concentration will be assigned to a faculty advisor in the department of the chosen concentration. This is done in an appointment with Dr. James Caponetti (410 Hesler Biology Building, 865-974-0365, jcaponet@utk.edu).

Current UT students entering prior to fall 2013

To officially declare a Biological Sciences major, CHEM 120CHEM 130 and BIOL 130 or 150 must be completed with a minimum grade of C. Students wishing to declare a major in Biological Sciences will be assigned a faculty advisor in on of the Biology departments. This is done by an appointment with Dr. James Caponetti (410 Hesler Biology Building, 865-974-0365, jcaponet@utk.edu). Declaration of a Biological Sciences major should occur as soon as the student decides on this course of study and has met the progression requirements, but no later than three semesters before the expected graduation date in order to ensure that requirements can be met in a timely manner.

Transfer students

To officially declare a Biological Sciences major, CHEM 120CHEM 130 and BIOL 150 must be completed with a minimum grade of C. Students wishing to declare a major in Biological Sciences will be assigned a faculty advisor in on of the Biology departments.
