General Biology Lab Coordinator and Distinguished Lecturer

Randy Brewton is the General Biology Program Coordinator and a Distinguished Lecturer in the Division of Biology.   He earned his bachelor’s degree in Biology from the University of Southern Mississippi.   Brewton investigated the role of Cell Death in pattern formation of the chicken wing while completing his Doctorate from the University of Tennessee (Go VOLS!).    While pursuing post-doctoral training at the UAB Medical Center, Brewton cloned the a3 chain of Type IX collagen in chicken and human, and used rotary shadowing electron microscopy to demonstrate the role of hyaluronan in forming the vitreous gel in mammals.

In addition to his Coordination duties, Brewton teaches BIOL 101 and 102 and loves helping students become more curious in an interactive classroom and finding ways to make Biology relevant to all students.   Brewton’s son, Nicolas, is a recent graduate of UT with a B.S in Kinesiology and will start Physical Therapy School in Memphis in the Fall of 2017.    Other interests include hiking, gardening and playing with his dog, Bandit!
